'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a company runner. On 25th and 26th September 1917 during the operations in the POLYGON WOOD he carried messages through heavy shell fire, acted as guide for parties to the line and attended to wounded until he himself was wounded while going to meet a ration party.'
