'For conspicuous gallantry near Peronne on 1st September, 1918. This non-commissioned officer, in the face of great difficulties, took up a position with his guns, and, although under intense machine-gun and artillery fire, remained in position until the attack was completed, and thus greatly assisted in the operation.'

Wounded in action (second occasion), 15 May 1917 (gun shot wound, face), and admitted to 29th Casualty Clearing Station, and thence to Ambulance Train, and admitted to 2nd Stationary Hospital, Abbeville; transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, 18 May 1917; to Australian General Base Depot, Camiers, 21 May 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 1 June 1917.
