Transferred to 8th Australian Machine Gun Company, 9 March 1916; taken on strength, Tel el Kebir, 11 March 1916. Admitted to 8th Field Ambulance, 31 May 1916 (diarrhoea); discharged to unit, 2 June 1916. Promoted Corporal, 1 June 1916. Embrked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Appointed Sergeant, 1 September 1916. Transferred to AIF Training Depot, England, 10 February 1917, transferred to 25th Machine Gun Company, and appointed 2nd Lieutenant. Attached to 3rd Training Bn for bombing instruction, 27 May-1 June 1917. Qualified as suitable to act as Instructor at Revolver School, Wareham, 14-20 July 1917.
