Proceeded overseas to France, 19 June 1917; taken on strength, 48th Bn, in the field, 9 July 1917.

Wounded in action, 29 September 1917 (shrapnel wound, right arm), and admitted to 12th Australian Field Ambulance, 30 September 1917; transferred to 10th Casualty Clearing Station, 8 October 1917, and then to Ambulance Train; admitted to No 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 9 October 1917; transferred to 4th Australian Division Base Depot, Havre, 19 October 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 2 November 1917.

On leave, 12 March 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 3 April 1918.

Found guilty, 25 May 1918, of being absent without leave from 9 am to 12 midnight, 25 May: awarded forfeiture of 3 days' pay; total forfeiture: 4 days' pay.

Admitted to 12th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 February 1919 (influenza); transferred to 48th Casualty Clearing Station, 7 February 1919 (broncho-pneumonia: listed as 'dangerously ill').
