Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 10 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 18 May 1916.

Wounded in action, 5 August 1916 (gun shot wound, right arm and neck); transferred to England, , and admitted to Cornwall Hall VAD Hospital, Sevenoaks, 29 August 1916; discharged from Central Chatham Hospital, 16 October 1916. Found guilty, 2 November 1916, of being absent without leave, Perham Downs, from 3.30 pm, 31 October, to 4 pm, 1 November 1916: awarded 7 days confined to camp and forfeited 2 days' pay. Found guilty, 23 January 1917, of being found outside the without leave, Wareham, 20 January 1917

Proceeded overseas to France, 10 June 1917; rejoined unit, 25 June 1917.

Admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, 23 July 1917, and transferred to 56th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred by Ambulance Train to 8th General Hospital, 20 July 1917 (trench fever); to 11th Convalescent Dept, 3 August 1917; discharged to Base, 21 August 1917; rejoined unit, 26 August 1917.

Wounded in action, 7 October 1917 (gun shot wound, thigh); admitted to Casualty Clearing Station and transferred to 16th General Hospital, 18 October 1917; to England, 19 October 1917, and admitted to War Hospital, Sardis, 20 October 1917 (foot amputated); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospiital, Harefield, 21 November 1918; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 7 January 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Euripides', 30 January 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 21 March 1918, for onward travel by rail to Brisbane; discharged (wounded), 20 September 1918.
