'East of YPRES, on the afternoon of the 31st August 1917 a column of Ammunition Wagons of the 113th Howitzer Battery was proceeding filled to the Brigade Forward Ammunition Dump, when the enemy commenced to barrage the road heavily with 4.2" and 5.9" shell. Three drivers of the column were wounded and two horses killed and 11 wounded. The immediate action of Bombardier SMITH accompanied by Driver F. BROWN in supervising and getting the wounded to cover and the wounded and killed horses clear of the teams was instrumental in preventing further casualties to personnel, horses and equipment. They showed an utter disregard for their own safety, as well as setting a splendid example. Their action greatly assisted the Officer in charge of the column.'
