Military Medal 'For coolness, courage and devotion to duty. On 10th October, 1917, a plank road in the vicinity of WESTHOEK was heavily shelled, causing casualties to men and horses, blocking traffic and causing congestion at a very dangerous point. Sapper BROWN obtained the assistance of other men in the vicinity, cleared the road of damaged wagons, and replaced the dislodged planking, thus opening the road and allowing traffic to move out of the barraged area. Whilst doing this the road was still under fire, shells bursting within 30 yards of the party. on 12th October, 1917, at ZONNEBEKE, he was left as a guide to a pack train during the temporary absence of his Officer. The area in which the train was working was heavily shelled, and although wounded through the lungs, he guided and kept the teams together until his Officer returned. He has at all times during his 18 months service in FRANCE, set a fine example of coolness and courage in the face of danger.'
