Military Medal 'During the attack on POLYGON WOOD near YPRES on 20th September, 1917, this N.C.O. was employed as linesman, and his work all through the advance and after the position had been consolidated was very good. He repeatedly went out over the shell swept area, showing utter disregard for personal danger, his one object was to maintain communication, thereby assisting to a great degree the success of the Battalion. His coolness and pluck under fire inspired the Section wonderfully.'

When all lines were cut by an intense enemy barrage, Sergeant BROWN, who is Battalion Signalling Sergeant, ran messages and took important orders to the Front Line returning alone through heavy machine gun fire and mending the lines. By his gallant act he enabled communication to be established at a most critical time, and undoubtedly assisted greatly in saving the situation.'
