Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations on the 19th May, 1918, this soldier displayed great initiative. He played a prominent part in the mopping up of VILLE-SUR-ANCRE near ALBERT. Private BROWN is a Lewis Gunner, and carried many magazines for his gun, which he was able to use with great success throughout the attack. Whilst his gun was located in the open, he, under heavy machine gun fire, crawled back to the Sunken Road, known as the CATERPILLAR, which at the time was being heavily shelled by the enemy, and brought back magazines and ammunition from a dump, which a few minutes later was blown up by enemy fire. On return, with the help of another man, he kept back the enemy with his gun, inflicting great casualties in the process. His example was magnificent.'
