Military Medal

'At HOLLEBEKE of the night of the 30th September, 1916, during a silent raid on the enemy's trench Pte. Brownlie displayed conspicuous bravery. He was second bayonet man of the Left Party. After Pte. Stirling, the first bayonet man, was wounded he took his place and carried out his duties with great resourcefulness and gallantry. He worked rapidly along the trenches and encountered a German, who refused to surrender, and was killed. He also bombed two entrances to a large dug-out from which groans were heard.'
