'On the night 11/12th September 1918, near Le Verguier, N.W. of St. Quentin, this N.C.O. showed great resourcefulness and courage during during hand-to-hand fighting with the enemy. He formed portion of a fighting patrol which became engaged with three parties of the enemy in superior numbers. By standing his ground, and fighting with the utmost determination, he repulsed the enemy's efforts to cut our men off.'
