Military Medal 'For courage and devotion to duty. Lance Corporal BURLEY is a N.C.O. of No. 2 Section of this Company, attached to 8th Australian Infantry Brigade. Throughout the night prior to our attack on the VILLERS BRETONNEUX front, East of AMIENS, on the 8th August 1918, he worked unceasingly in establishing communications. On the morning of the attack he followed close up to the attacking infantry for a distance of 12,000 yards, carrying and laying cable. When the final position was reached, he was the first to volunteer to go back over the line to effect repairs. This he did under most trying conditions and under shell fire from the enemy. It was mainly due to his energy, courage, devotion to duty, and the excellent example he set to other men that continuous communication between Brigade and Battalions was established.'
