Embarked from Sydney on board HT 'Beltana', 25 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 29 January 1917. Marched in to 12th Training Bn, Codford, 30 January 1917. Found guilty, 12 February 1917, of (1) failing to appear at place of rendezvous appointed by his CO, (2) being absent without leave from midnight, 8 February 1917, to 10:30 am, 10 February 1917: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited a total of 10 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 28 March 1917; marched in to No 4 Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, 29 March 1917; taken on strength, 45th Bn, 1 April 1917.

Wounded in action and admitted to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 3 July 1917 (gun shot wound, right thigh); to England, 7 July 1917, and admitted to Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich. Transferred to No 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 24th August 1917; discharged on furlough, 14 September 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 28 September 1917.

Found guilty, 2 October 1917, of being absent off furlough from 6:00 pm, 28 September 1917, to 4:30 pm, 1 October 1917: awarded 7 days' confined to barracks; forfeited 4 days' pay.

Marched out to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 27 October 1917; Attached for temporary duty to AQMG, London, 3 December 1917. Admitted to Holborn Military Hospital, Mitcham, 12 December 1917 (sick, cerebro-spinal meningitis carrier); discharged to AQMG, London, 29 December 1917. Detached from duty, 2 April 1918, and marched in to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 3 April 1918.

Found guilty, 29 April 1918, of being absent without leave from midnight 26 April 1918, to 11:00 pm, 27 April 1918: awarded 1 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited 2 days' pay.

Marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, Deverill, 6 May 1918; proceeded overseas to France, 30 May 1918; marched in to Australian General Base Depot, Le Havre, 1 June 1918. Rejoined unit, 6 June 1918. Granted leave to United Kingdom, 6 February 1919, from 9 February 1919 to 23 February 1919; granted extension of leave, 21 February 1918, to 25 February 1919; rejoins unit 27 February 1919.

Proceeded to England, 29 April 1919, and marched in to No 4 Group, Hurdcott, 30 April 1919; marched in to No 2 Group, Sutton Veny, 23 June 1919; attached to Graves Registration Detachment and proceeded overseas to France, 30 June 1919; detached to unit, 18 August 1919; proceeded to England and marched in to No 2 Group, Sutton Veny, 22 August 1919; proceeded on indefinite leave (awaiting family), 7 October 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Shropshire', 2 December 1919; arrived Sydney, 30 January 1920; discharged (medically unfit), 21 March 1920.
