'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Ascension Farm on 18 September, 1918. When nearing the objective the sub-section under him was held up by heavy machine gun fire. He advanced alone and bombed the enemy machine guns and drove them out of the trench. He then rushed his guns up and brought them into action, shooting several of the retreating enemy.'
