'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a counter attack. After all the officers of his company had become casualties, this officer, though three times wounded himself, gallantly led the company forward arrested the enemey's advance, and considerably advanced his company's front. He stayed consolidating his new position until a fourth wound incapacitated him. He showed fine courage and determination.'
