War service: embarked Sydney, 17 July 1918; disembarked London, England, 27 Sptember1918, and marched into 5th Training Bn, and allotted to Reinforcements of 3rd Bn. Transferred to Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery Details, Heytesbury, 4 October 1918, and mustered as Gunner. Proceeded overseas to France, 21 November 1918; taken on strength, 1st Divisional Ammunition Column, in the field, 11 December 1918. Marched out to England for return to Australia, 11 February 1919. Admitted to 1st Australian General Hospital, Sutton Veny, 14 February 1919 (influenza); discharged to Training Depot, 21 March 1919. Granted leave with pay and subsistence for Non-Military Employment, 29 April-9 September 1919, to attend Coucil of Legal Education course, London. Final report stated: 'Gnr Byrne took a keen interest in the lectures, and was regular in attendance. The experience should prove beneficial to him in his future career.'
