War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 2 March 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 6 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 29 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 5 April 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 26 July 1916; reverted to Private, 14 September 1916, on being found guilty of (1) drunkenness, 9 September; (2) absent from Billetting Area without leave from 2100, 9 September, till apprehended by Military Field Police, 2200, 9 September. Found guilty, 24 September 1916, of drunkenness while on Active Service, Belgium, 22 September 1916: awarded 5 days' Field Punishment No 2. Proceeded on leave, 7 November 1917; rejoined unit in France, 25 November 1917. On leave to Paris, 12 March 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 22 March 1918.
