Military Medal

'For wonderful pluck, coolness and devotion to duty on the night of 8th August 1918 during operations east of Amiens. Transport and men passing along the road in Rue Bulot, Corbie, at 9.30 p.m. suffered casualties through shell fire. Private Caine, a stretcher bearer, at once ran out from his billet, and with the aid of a Sergeant, extricated wounded men from kicking horses and mules. He coolly bandaged the wounded while shells were still falling right alongside. When he finished at one place he went up and down looking for other wounded. By this time stretchers and shutters had been procured and men who would have bled to death but for Private Cain's prompt work were got away to the Dressing Station.'

'In vicinity of MONTBREHAIN, north of ST. QUENTIN, on 5th October, 1918, he did magnificent work both during the advance and while his platoon was digging in. When advancing accross the flank to the objective the area was swept by a storm of enemy machine gun fire which inflicted heavy casualties. The other stretcher bearers became casualties but Private CAINE immediately set about rendering first aid, displaying the utmost coolness and disregard for the enemy fire. Later when the platoon was digging in on its objective, he rendered very fine service under heavy flanking and frontal machine gun fire. Awarded MM in 19th October, 1918.'
