Meritorious Service Medal 'On 8th June 1918, while on a bathing parade at AMIENS, No. 3332 Private H.R. WEBBER, 32nd Battalion, A.I.F. got into difficulty and sank. Immediately on hearing the alarm Private CALLAWAY came on the scene and displayed magnificent bravery and gallantry by making repeated efforts to save Private WEBBER's life. Notwithstanding great personal risk, owing to depth of water and nature of bottom, Private CALLAWAY dived a number of times for the drowning man and finally attached a rope to his waist. Rising to the surface he had time only to call "pull" before he collapsed owing to exhaustion. Private CALLAWAY in turn was pulled to the bank and after considerable time was resuscitated by means of artificial respiration. His splendid conduct was admired by all who were witneses of the scene and his repeated efforts to save Private WEBBER set a fine example of heroism which deserves special recognition.'
