'On the 14th March, 1917, during the attack on the quarry near BEAUMETZ this N.C.O. showed great daring and good leadership and rendered exceptional assistance to his troop leader. During the subsequent withdrawal he assisted a Corporal whose horse had been killed. The Corporal who was getting away on foot holding onto the stirrup of Trooper GREENHILL, became exhausted. Sergeant CALLANDER seeing this galloped back and handed over his horse and came out on foot thus exposing himself to greater personal risk.'
