Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was severely gassed on two occasions, but declined to leave his post, and on another occasion he went to the rescue of some wounded in a 'pill box" that had been smashed by an 8 in. shell and was still under heavy fire. In spite of great difficulty and danger, with the aid of another gunner he extricated the wounded and carried them to a place of safety. He has always set an example of great courage and devotion to duty that is worthy of the highest praise.'
