Military Medal 'During the attack on MONTBREHAIN, east of PERONNE on 5th October, 1918, Private CARMICHAEL was No. 1 of a Lewis gun team, which was pushed out into a isolated position to guard the flanks, while his Company continued the advance. Here amid the heaviest machine gun and shell fire he continued to fire his gun at the retreating enemy and inflicted serious casualties on them. Later in the day the enemy counter attacked and were moving forward in artillery formation. At this stage CARMICHAEL did magnificent work. Despite the heavy shelling and a hail of machine gun bullets he fired his gun with deadly effect until his ammunition gave out. More ammunition came forward and again he continued to fire and his work alone was responsible for the breakdown of a serious counter attack at a vital part of the line.'
