Found guilty, 20 March 1916, of being absent without leave, 2-3 pm, 17 March 1916: confined to camp for 3 days.

Admitted to No 1 Auxiliary Hospital, Heliopolis, 31 March 1916 (defective vision). Medical examination, 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, concluded, 30 March 1916, that defective vision (dating from right eye injury while mining in the Philippines) rendered him permanently unfit for military service.

Admitted to 3rd Australian Hospital, Helipolis, 9 May 1916 (pneumonia); condition rated 'dangerously ill', 10 May 1916; 'out of danger' 7 June 1916. 'Danegerously ill', 20 June 1916; 'out of danger', 20 June 1916; 'dangerously ill', 23 June 1916.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Karoola', 5 July 1916; disembarked Sydney, 2 August 1916; discharged, Brisbane, 11 April 1917 (medically unfit).
