'During the operations near MESSINES this Non Commissioned Officer did excellent work in charge of the Battalion Stretcher Bearers from 8th to 12th June 1917. He worked unceasingly under very heavy machine gun and shell fire throughout this period, and besides bringing in men of his own unit also carried men of the 4th, 12th and 11th Australian Infantry Brigades and of the New Zealanders. He behaved throughout with great coolness and courage and showed the utmost devotion to duty, exhibiting at the same time great resource and powers of leadership. He is an original member of the Battalion and his work has been consistently good at Anzac (Gallipoli) and in France.'
