'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. He handled his company brilliantly, and captured five machine guns and crews without loss to his company. He also made a personal reconnaissance, with the result that he captured 120 prisoners. Next day he sent forward a patrol, which captured three machine guns and sixteen prisoners. He did splendid work.'
