Proceeded overseas to France, 23 July 1917; taken on strength, 20th Bn, 9 August 1917. Treated for trench feet, 9-14 October 1917. Rejoined Bn in the field, 16 October 1917.

Proceeded on leave to England, 4 March 1918; rejoined unit in Belgium, 26 March 1918.

Wounded in action (mustard gas shell), 27 July 1918; admitted to 47th Casualty Clearing Station, 27 July 1918, and thence to 47th General Hospital, Le Treport, 31 July 1918. Transferred to England, 5 August 1918, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, 6 August 1918. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, 26 August 1918.

Granted furlough from 28 August-11 September 1918, to report to No. 3 Convalescent Depot, Hurdcott. Marched in to No. 2 Convalescent Depot, Weymouth, 11 September 1918; to No. 3 Convalescent Depot, Sutton Veny, 12 November 1918. Found guilty of being absent without leave, 26-27 November 1918: awarded 1 day's Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 2 days' pay.

Commenced return to Australia on 'City of York', 14 January 1919. Disembarked, 27 February 1919; discharged , 12 April 1919.
