'As a member of a wiring party on night 17th/18th October, 1917, who were connecting entanglements in front of an advanced post on the BROODSEINDE RIDGE he, by his coolness and absolute contempt of shell fire, set such an example to the remainder of the party, and steadied all those around him, that the work was completed - the whole task was carried out under an enemy' barrage fire.'
