'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the heavy hostile shelling of all batteries in a position at the commencement of an attack. When all the officers with one battalion had become casualties he was ordered to take over the command, and notwithstanding the continuous heavy shell fire on this battery he immediately ran to it, took control, reorganized the detachments, and by his splendid courage and example restored and maintained its fire until the close of the action.'
