'For devotion to duty and courage east of YPRES. Between the 9th and 21st October, 1917, he was engaged in work on the forward buried cable routes and rendered valuable assistance in maintaining communications on several occasions under heavy shell fire. he displayed special courage on the night of 15th/16th October, 1917, in connection with the cable route to the summit of the PASSCHENDAELE RIDGE when, regardless of personal safety under heavy fire, he with competence managed his working party and gave assistance in laying the cable and successfully establishing communication.'
