In marking out the track (staked and taped by Lieutenant Ewart) by means of notice boards. This sapper made repeated trips to the Dump of Notice boards, and carried boards forward placing them where indicated by his officer and Sergeant. On the completion of this he made a run through the barrage to Battalion Headquarters at HOOGE to report to the O.C. Company and then later conducted another run to HOOGE through the barrages once more with report on the consolidation of the line, returning again to his officer with further instructions. His devotion and gallantry cannot be too highly spoken of, as he had in his runs 4 times to pass through most heavy barrages.'
