'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 5th April 1918 during the attack on our positions opposite DERNANCOURT and ALBERT. Notwithstanding the frequent very heavy shell fire this N.C.O. carried out his work of repairing and maintaining telephone lines in the forward area for thirteen hours continuously. His absolute disregard of shell fire in the performance of his duties was a splendid example to his fellow linesmen, and his skill and determination were of greatest value in maintaining communication during a very critical period. his work and conduct have been excellent throughout.'
