'For gallantry and devotion to duty during action at CLERY-sur-SOMME on 31st August, 1918. When the Company was held up by strong enemy machine gun positions he organised a party and taking command successfully dealt with a section of them. During this incident this Non Commissioned Officer displayed good qualities of leadership and set a fine example to his men.'
