Military Medal 'These N.C.O.s formed part of the detachment of a gun in action at PLOEGSTEERT during a S.O.S. on morning of 8th June, 1917, when the enemy heavily shelled the Battery. One shell struck the gun on which COGLE and [18727 G.M.] QUIGLEY were serving, and killed or wounded the whole of the crew. These N.C.O.s, although wounded and considerably shaken, refused to allow themselves to be relieved until the S.O.S. call was completed. By their action they set a splendid example and kept their gun in action under most difficult circumstances. The gun was damaged, although not sufficiently to put it out of action.'
