Military Medal 'During the phase of the offensive along the SOMME from 12th August 1918 to 30th August 1918, this Non Commissioned Officer by assiduous attention to duty under shell and Machine Gun fire showed conspicuous bravery. By his perseverance the lines were kept in a very satisfactory state. Frequently he assisted in mending lines under heavy shell fire. Sergeant COLE established visual communication with three Companies on the 30th August at CLERY though his own station was under constant Machine gun fire having been observed by the enemy and being in their full view and they succeeded in putting bullets through the battery box beside the lamp.'
