Found Guilty by Field General Court Martial, 27 September 1916, of being illegally absent after being warned for duty in the trenches: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

Admitted to 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 27 October 1916(venereal disease); discharged to Base, 29 October 1916.

Released from No 1 Military Prison, 20 October 1917, and remainder of sentence remitted.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Durham Castle', 10 March 1918; discharged (medically unfit), 14 June 1918.
