'During an attack at VAUVILLERS, near AMIENS, on 9th August 1918, the Commander of the double Lewis Gun Section to which this man belonged, was killed. Private CONNOLE at once stepped out and took command of the section, and led them on to the attack, under heavy machine gun fire. When some of the men showed signs of hesitating, he walked out in front, rallied the men, and led them on to the objective, firing a Lewis Gun from the hip. He was first to the enemy positions, and stood on the parapet firing his gun into the enemy positions killing man of the enemy. He set a magnificent example.'
