'This Driver was lead-driver of one of the gun teams of a forward Section which came into action under Machine Gun and Artillery fire on the 29th September, South East of BELLICOURT. Whilst moving to the position selected for the teams, several casualties occurred to personnel and horses, and one limber upset. This driver took charge, and, with the assistance of other men succeeded in righting the limber and moving clear. He rendered much assistance to the N.C.O. in re-organising teams, rendered necessary by the casualties, and in the subsequent removal of the guns under a very heavy Machine gun and 77.mm. gun fire from very close range. Where all behaved splendidly, this Driver was prominent by his coolness, excellent example, and devotion to duty and is deserving of special recognition.'
