Embarked Sydney, 25 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 29 January 1917. On account of deficiencies in Mess equipment at sea, to have 1/- pay stopped.

Proceeded overseas to France, 3 May 1917; taken on strength, 4th Pioneer Bn, 8 May 1917.

Found guilty, 15 September 1917, of being absent without leave from 0900 parade, 14 September till apprehended at 1000 14 September: awarded forfeiture of 2 days' pay.

Admitted to 8th Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 5th Divisional Rest Station, 31 October 1917 (haemorrhoids); transferred to 17th Casualty Clearing Station, 1 November 1917; to 8th Stationary Hospital, 2 November 1917 (piles); to 4th Australian Division Base Depot, 7 November 1917; to 4th Stationary Hospital, Harfleur, 12 November 1917; rejoined unit, 9 February 1918.

Admitted to 4th Australlian Field Ambulance, 17 June 1918 (rheumatism); transferred to 5th Casualty Clearing Station, 18 June 1918; by Ambulance Train No 28 to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 20 June 1918 (myalgia); to 73rd General Hospital, Trouville, 1 July 1918; to 1st Australian Convalescent Depot, Havre, 5 July 1918 (chronic rheumatism); transferred to England (rheumatism and age - 48), 17 July 1918, and marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 19 July 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Medic', 24 August 1918; disembarked Sydney, 9 October 1918, for onward travel to Brisbane; discharged (medically unfit), 5 November 1918.
