'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack on POLYGON BUTTE on the 26th September 1917 he continually stimulated his platoon by his coolness under heavy fire. He captured a strong point and although wounded he refused to leave his post until it had been consolidated and made secure.'
