Embarked Melbourne, 27 May 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 18 July 1916. Found guilty, Larkhill, 23 September 1916, of (1) illegal possession of blank ammunition (2) discharging blank ammunition in the lines: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2. Found guilty, Larkhill, 28 October 1916, of being absent without leave from midnight, 28 October, to 9.45 pm, 1 November 1916: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Proceeded overseas to France, 23 November 1916.

Wounded in action, 31 January 1917 (gun shot wound, right leg), and admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; by No 10 Ambulance Train, 7 February 1917, and admitted to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 8 February 1917; to England, 10 February 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth; to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 6 July 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 13 July 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Demosthenes', 27 July 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 24 September 1917; discharged (medically unfit), 17 December 1917.
