Wounded in action, Messines, 7 June 1917 (gun shot wound, left thigh, fractured femur); admitted to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 13 June 1917; transferred to 8th General Hospital, Wimereux, 19 June 1917; to England, 21 May 1918, and admitted same day to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell (wound severe); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 30 May 1918; discharged on furlough, 28 September 1918, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 14 October 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Ulysses', 18 January 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 4 March 1919, for onward travel by rail to Brisbane; discharged (wounded), Brisbane, 31 March 1919.
