'During the 3rd and 4th September, 1916, with [ 3236 F.A.] L/Cpl. Bartsch, he worked continuously, keeping on when others were exhausted. He showed conspicuous courage and bravery. Not once, but again and again, did he attend to wounded under heavy shell-fire. Further, he acted ably as a guide and rendered great assistance under sniper fire when gaining touch with the unit on the right of his company.'
