Proceeded overseas to France, 25 April 1917; taken on strength, 39th Bn, in the field, 13 May 1917.

Wounded in action, 8 June 1917 (multiple gun shot wounds, face, chest, hands and knees), and admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 6th General Hospital, Rouen, 9 June 1917; to England, 14 June 1917, and admitted to Richmond Military Hospital, 15 June 1917; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 10 July 1917; discharged on furlough, 11 July 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 25 July 1917.

Marched in to No 3 Command Depot, 8 August 1917; marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, 24 August 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 10 September 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 22 September 1917.

Wounded in action (second occasion), 4 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left hand), and admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance and then to 44th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred by Ambulance Train No 27 to 16th General Hospital, Le Treport, 5 October 1917; to No 3 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 11 October 1917; discharged to Base Depot, Rouelles, 15 October 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 4 November 1917.

Wounded in action (third occasion), 30 March 1918 (gun shot wound, left arm), and admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 31 March 1918; to England, 1 April 1918, and admitted same day to 1st Birmingham War Hospital, Rednall; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 18 April 1918; discharged on furlough, 22 April 1918, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 6 May 1918.

Found guilty, 7 May 1918, of being absent without leave from 10.30 am to 2 pm, 6 May 1918: awarded forfeiture of 1 day's pay.

Marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, Longbridge Deverill, 22 May 1918.

Transferred to Machine Gun Details, and marched in to Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 31 May 1918.
