Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This N.C.O. was No. 1 in charge of a Lewis gun, which he used with great effect, checking the enemy at a very critical time, when they had broken through and occupied part of our line. Lance Corporal Cracknell had used up all his ammunition when the enemy made a final rush at him, but he got back with his gun to the block established in our trench, where he fell exhausted. His peculiarly gallant effort held up the enemy sufficiently long to give time for arrangements for a counter attack to be completed.'
