War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 30 September 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 19 November 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 14 November 1917; taken on strength, 56th Bn, 22 November 1917. Found guilty by District Court Martial, Hurdcott, 7 July 1917, of attempting to commit suicide (pleaded not guilty); awarded 30 days' detention and forfeiture of 88 days' pay (58 days in confinement awaiting trial). Army Council order of 6 October 1917 read: The Army Council direct that all record of the above conviction is to be erased from the document of the accused who should be relieved from all consequences of his trial.' Wounded in action, 8 April 1918 (gun shot wound, right ear); admitted to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 10 April 1918; transferred to No 2 Convalescent Depot, 11 April 1918; to Base Depot, 15 April 1918; rejoined unit, 28 May 1918. Wounded in action (second occasion), 9 July 1918 (shrapnel wound, face); admitted to 1st Australian General Hospital, Rouen, 12 July 1918; transferred to No 2 Convalescent Depot, 22 July 1918; to Base Depot, 28 July 1918; rejoined unit, 20 August 1918. Admitted to 58th Casualty Clearing Station, 1 October 1918 (infected right toe); transferred to 6th General Hospital, Rouen, 2 October 1918; to England, 17 October 1918, and admitted to Bath War Hospital, 18 October 1918; to Taunton Military Hospital, 31 October 1918; discharged on furlough, 13 November 1918, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 27 November 1918.
