'During the operations east of JEANCOURT on the morning of 18th September, 1918, Corporal CROOKS displayed great bravery, dash and leadership in the face of heavy machine gun fire. The advance was being hampered by some troublesome machine guns and Corporal CROOKS led a few men up on a flank and courageously rushed 3 machine guns from the flank and killed the crew of 1 and captured the other 2, thus allowing the advance to continue.'
