'For consistent gallant behaviour especially with reference to 1st June, when they [CRUICKSHANK and 7639 S.G. SMITH] entered a pit and succeeded, after great difficulty, in removing a man who had been wounded and buried owing to the explosion of a heavy shell. Immediately afterwards the pit was destroyed by another shell.'
