'Is recommended for great gallantry and leadership in action near HAMEL WOOD, east of CORBIE, on 4th July, 1918. This N.C.O. set an excellent example of coolness and dash throughout the operation and handled his Section magnificently. When the final objective was reached he displayed great initiative in consolidating the position under heavy enemy machine gun fire. As soon as the Section had established their post he led them forward to silence an enemy post which had been established about a hundred yards to their front. By his skilful leadership, he got his party in behind the post and then attacked it from the rear, bringing back two machine guns and five prisoners without losing a man. He set an excellent example of determination and fearlessness throughout and greatly inspired his comrades. I cannot recommend him too highly. He was awarded the Military Medal on the 27th March, 1916, for gallantry at HEBUTERNE.'
