Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a convoy of mules carrying forward engineering material and small arm ammunition, which were urgently required. The convoy came into a heavy barrage and was partly scattered. He collected all the animals together and succeeded in delivering the whole of the material to its destination.'

He led the first wave of his company in the attack under very heavy machine gun fire, and took three enemy machine guns, one of which he captured himself.
