Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at HAMEL WOOD, south east of CORBIE on 4th July, 1918. When his Platoon Commander became a casualty he at once assumed command and led his men to their objective, displaying considerable leadership and initiative. Although the party detailed for a flanking strong point were almost annihilated and so failed to establish, he chose his own ground and carried out both their task and his own linking up with the remainder of his Company early in the operation. He set a fine example throughout.'
